In today’s world, information system has plentiful benefits in the management of health care and refining the quality of care. Health information system is fundamental for the excellence of patient care and for the quality of organizations, hospitals and agencies to accomplish these information necessities. To define, health information systems is “set up to produce timely and accurate information about what is happening in health sectors. Ideally, this information is then used to guide day-to-day operations of the health system, track performance over time, learn from past results, improve continuously, increase transparency and strengthen accountability” (Carolina Population Center, 2014). The first components according to Jamila Ealey (Data Team Manager), is the “input”. This component ensures the utilization of well-trained and knowledgeable individuals that will assist in synchronizing the data collection, processing and sharing procedure. This also entails existing policies and laws that help guide the process and in addition; the financial resources that will be needed to facilitate the smooth running of the information system.
The second component is the “process”. An integrated health information system fetches data from numerous sources. Currently, the Unit utilizes HIV testing centers, health care providers, HIV service centers and surveillance labs to contain data in the form of “questionnaire forms”. The information gathered from these questionnaire forms are then used to address health outcomes, determinants, inequalities and status affecting the HIV epidemic in the State of Georgia. For example, the HIV Prevention department collects totally different data and from a different sources than the HIV Care department. These departments also so not talk to each other and as such are not connected. However, there is work underway to have the different departments work closely together to do matching of participants for possible follow-up and subsequently help get the data complete.
