To begin with, the main character, Dorothy, changes the way she views her uncle due to an external force, which was the storm that causes the shift. Close to the beginning of the story, Dorothy states," He had been so hard on his Kansas farm that had given way and left him weak and nervous." We know that people who work hard are strong, but Dorothy took it such way thinking that people who work too hard get weak and nervous. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker viewed her father as though a man with strength. For example, in the beginning the speaker states,"His hands, you see, Mama said were hard and callused." The speaker and we know that if your hands are hard and callused you are probably a hard worker so we can make an inference that the speaker views her father as a strong person. She is grateful that he works so hard for here her and her family. This also compares with Dorothy views with her uncle in the end of the story when he saved all of those people. However, later in the poem the speaker states," But on Sunday, those hands you see felt soft and would hold Mama's and walk to church."
