Study species and housing
The Australian terrestrial hermit crab, Coenobita variabilis, from the Coenobitidae family, are endemic to Northern Australia, are one of only 17 terrestrial hermit crab species (Harvey, 1992) and were used in this study. They are found in coastal habitats, on sandy shores or rocky beaches, and are nocturnal. They live in a gastropod shell, which offers protection from predation and desiccation to their soft abdomen (Turra and Gorman, 2014). Females deposit eggs into the ocean where the larvae develop before they metamorphose into mature crabs upon colonizing land (Harvey, 1992). The crabs used in this experiment were purchased from Pisces Enterprises, where they had been caught from beaches of Western Australia before being habituated and later transported to Tasmania for this experiment. …show more content…
Humidity was kept at a constant 60%, maintained via spraying the tank walls with fresh water and keeping wet sea sponges within the tanks. The crabs were fed a diet of muesli and fresh apple and kept on a 12-hour reversed daylight cycle. Food was changed once a day, salt water was changed every second day and fresh water was refilled when required. The crabs were split into 6 tanks of 7 crabs, and were kept for approximately 3 weeks before
