One of the most common plot arcs in literature is The Hero’s Journey. The Book of the Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway, is a realistic fiction novel. At first when you read it you might think that it doesn’t have a hero in it, and you would be right. But the main character, Santiago, does follow the hero’s journey plot arc. Here is a quote proving my point, “He was an old man who fished alone in the Gulf Stream.” This is how Santiago’s normal life is, he fishes for a living. This phase in a hero's journey is called the status quo. This is the beginning when the character/potential hero is just living their normal life.
