Heterosexism is present in all aspects of society, from your parents’ inquiries to magazine ads, to public policy, most social structure are based on the assumption that everyone’s primary romantic, emotional, physical and sexual attractions are to someone of the opposite sex. People have been educated since birth that heterosexism is the right thing to do, and have been taught by their parents or teachers not to get involved in homosexuality or bisexuality, setting some harsh examples on the minds of those who are educated. For example, a mother educates her son unintentionally when she sees a gay or lesbian couple on the street or the internet, telling him not to be like them or he will receive punishment and even hatred from his family or society. No matter the community, discussion and talks about homosexuality still receives the same reaction like moans, groans and eye rolling. Conversations about persons who are transgender are initially met with a fair amount of ignorance of the topic followed by discomfort. Many of the beliefs, attitudes, and values about homosexuality and transgenderism that young people have taken form before the high school years are the bigger problems of educating them after they experience puberty. Consequently, if children do not receive tolerant messages from their teachers you can bet that the heterosexist world they live in will do all it can to foster gender variant bigotry and misunderstanding as they grow.
