“We are the sons of the umma (Muslim community)- the party of God (Hizb Allah) the vanguard of which was made victorious by God in Iran” (The Hizballah Program 1987). Hezbollah is a radical Shi’ite Muslim group present in Lebanon. It grew as resistance movement against the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. Hezbollah follows the doctrine of Wilayt-al-faqih, popularized by Ayotallah Khomeini during the Iranian Revolution. Even though we are an Islamic organization, being a part of the democratic structure of Lebanon, we accept all other religions and their ideologies. The politically exclusive and intolerant tone adopted at the time of Hezbollah’s emergence has given way to a politically inclusive and conciliatory discourse that later lead to the party’s participation in the secular and democratic political system. In contradiction to the Sunni concept of the abode of war and the abode of Islam, Hezbollah focuses of oppressors and oppressed. The oppressed are not exclusively Muslims, but rather all those who are oppressed on the earth; socially, economically, politically and culturally.
