The Nile Hymn vs. The Aten Hymn In reading “The Hymn to the Nile, c. 2100 BCE” from the Old Kingdom and“ Amenhotep IV and The Hymn to Aten”, from the New Kingdom there are distinct similarities and differences that conclude the way each one of these kingdoms worshiped their God or Gods. From the “Hymn to the Nile” and the “Amenhotep IV and The Hymn to Aten”, a better understand from the way people worshiped their God or Gods so that their land would become plentiful and help them make it through life. “The Hymn of the Nile, c. 2100 BCE”, originated in the Old Kingdom as a dedication to celebrate the flooding of the Nile river. It was written and published to give a feel of how the Nile was worshiped and God like to the people that lived during that time. “The Amenhotep IV and Hymn to Aten” was written during the New Kingdom instead of being a celebration to a river; it was more of a worshiping to the sun God. The similarities and differences in both versions come from the point of view of the people, and how and why these physical features are portrayed as God-like. The reason for why these features were worshiped is because the people felt the need to give praise to these Gods because if not there could be a possibility of famine and catastrophic disaster. They are both viewed as appraisals and spoken positively about but yet in “The Hymn to the Nile” they talk about not favoring the “Hymn to Aten”, vise versa. “They dread him who creates the heat, even him who has made his son the universal master in order to give prosperity to Egypt” (Nile). Compared to Aten who explains that the Nile is evil and comes from the underworld. The people portray both of these hymns to be evil and not wanted to one another because of disaster that could occur if one comes to the other. Differences between the two hymns are that in the Nile you had polytheistic (belief in more than one God) beliefs and in Aten had monotheistic (belief in one God) beliefs. In “The Hymn to the Nile, c. 2100 BCE” there were different Gods that they worshiped to for the land, The Gods included Re, Seb, Ptah and Nepera. In
