It was a weird day of hockey at Bernick’s arena. Last year, Cole Bright and I were the only goalies in the high school hockey program. At this time, Cole was out with a mild head injury. Because of this, Greg Henning, science teacher and goalie extraordinaire, was out practicing with us. Also, since we had a game soon, which Cole would miss, Gavin Reitz, a forward who played goalie years ago, was practicing for his big day. All of this and the different overall feel of the practice made for a pretty weird day. However the weirdest part was going to come near the very end of practice. We were doing a fun drill with three nets all in one end of the rink. Multiple players from two teams would go out and try to score on any of the nets. Being the only goalie that currently plays, I did not see many shots. Most were wise enough to shoot on the other goalies with far less skill and training. Everyone looked on with concern and a bit of fear for what might happen. Then something miraculous happened. Cobb must have underestimated Jones and did not go as hard as he usually does. In stark contrast, Jones was determined to win this battle and emerge with the puck. Jones laid a beautiful hit, throwing his shoulder into the unprepared Cobb. He sent Cobb down to the ice confused and embarrassed. Nobody really knew what had just happened and we were all in shock that the unimaginable had just happened. Jones gathered the puck with a huge smile on his face. I don’t think I had ever heard such a big reaction from everyone in practice. Sticks were tapping the ice showing their appreciation and voices were yelling in disbelief. I was looking around at the reactions and even our coach, Mr. Hacker, was smiling and had a bit of a
