In the book, Until They Bring the Streetcars Back, the main character Cal sits in jail. Cal loves his friend, Lola, who he cares for in a warm fuzzy way. Cal buy things for his friend Gretchen. Trying to help Gretchen, Cal gets put in jail. Even though Cal loves them both, he loses them in the end. Cal only felt a warm feeling for Lola. Lola and Cal were unsuccessful in the end. He never cared for Lola like he cared for Gretchen. Saddened by the end result, Gretchen and Cal were unsuccessful because Cal felt unattracted to her. For high school love to work, action needs to accompany the warm fuzzy feeling. Sid gave Cal a bottle he missed. To make things worse, Sid put the bottle in the truck, and he saw all the extra alcohol Cal stole. Soon after, Sid yells, “You stealing from me.. you god damn stealing from me, you little bastard?” (West 192). This quote shows text from Sid yelling at Cal for stealing the alcohol. Cal stole the alcohol to frame gretchen's dad later on for stealing it. Love through action happens in real life, too. In the bible, John tells us to express love through action. In the bible, “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions” (1 John 3:18 NLT). This quote proves that action speaks louder than words. People need action instead of just the warm fuzzy feeling. Cal showed action for Gretchen. Useful and helpful, the passage from the bible proves that love is expressed through action.
