A hip fracture is an injury that occurs near the proximal end of the femur. The hip is the joint between the upper end of the thighbone and its socket in the pelvis. It is a serious injury that requires immediate medical attention. Hip fractures in the younger population usually occur in long falls, car accidents, or other serious traumas. Although hip fractures are prevalent in the younger population, hip fractures are most common in the elderly population. Hip fractures most commonly happen to those above the age of sixty. In the older population, a hip fracture can cause a list of very serious complications which include: a challenging hospital recovery and also a long hospital stay. Doctors and therapist do a great job of rehabilitating patients but what happens initially when the hip is fractured? First aid respondents stop bleeding if necessary, manage pain and inflammation, and most importantly seek medical help as soon as possible. Without the help of first aid respondents the results could be fatal. Though at times hip fractures cannot always be as noticeable as other injuries, hip fractures can be just as serious if not worse. When looking for hip fractures one should see if the victim can move their leg, if the injured leg is shorter than the uninjured leg and also if the injured leg is rotated either toward or away from the uninjured leg. Those with a hip fracture may also experience swelling or bruising in the hip area with added pain to the groin area. Walking for long periods or standing may cause the fracture to spread, so it is very important to recognize a hip fracture in its early
