Historical Response to Common Sense

Thomas Paine, born February 9th, 1737, was a British immigrant that migrated to the colonies in 1774. Paine would go on to become one of the colonies’ founding fathers and a monumental figure in government and philosophy. In 1776, Paine published a book titled “Common Sense” which brought to light many of the fallacies and excuses colonist would use when confronted with the idea of breaking away from Britain. Common Sense was the most popular book in the colonies at the time because of its enlightening look on government and independence. The book played a key role in American history as it allowed the colonist the understand concepts that may have before been unknown or unjustly looked down upon.
