The essay will discuss an innovation in clinical practice that will be beneficial to the patients and promote quality of life especially in elderly people. It will discuss a brief definition of leadership and characteristics of a leader. The essay will highlight the importance of leadership characteristics in implementing the innovation and discuss a model of change within healthcare.
The rationale for writing the essay is to stress out that there is a need of critical holistic assessment on admission especially in elderly people. This is to provide excellent care, avoid wilder deterioration and further complications. Many epidemiological studies shows up to a quarter of rapid response team or medical emergency team calls occur in 24-48 hours of patient’s hospital admission (Jones, 2013 and Mora, et. al., 2015). 2003, p.62). Holistic is defined as a theory that relates the existence of an entity as being whole rather than its fragmental sum (Webster, 1989). American Holistic Nurses’ Association (AHNA) has defined the inclusion of this theory in professional nursing as encompassing very form of nursing that strives for achieving the goal of healing the whole of a person from beginning to his end. There are two views to holistic nursing. First, that holism in nursing addresses the interdependence, of mind-body, or of the physiological, psychosocial and spiritual aspects of a person. It regards the whole being greater than its fragmental sum. The other view is that holism regards a person as a single entity that is in mutual process with its surrounding. Holistic nursing encompasses both views and believes that the goals of bettering or healing an individual could be fulfilled by applying either framework
