Censorship has been a recurring issue in music for several reasons, and there are arguments for both oppositions. Freedom of speech, or more broadly freedom of expression, is a human right that everyone in the world is entitled to, but as a global society, we are unsure of how to accommodate everyone’s wants and needs and hesitant to do so. Hollywood Undead, an American rap and rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2005 but were unable to release their first record Swan Songs for two years due to the difficulty finding a record label that would not censor their lyrics. Eventually they signed a contract with A&M/Octone Records, but there is still a parental advisory warning on the album cover.

Each member has their own stage name/nickname that they go by permanently and wear a mask on stage during their first couple songs. In general, band aspires to keep their true identities a secret, but social media and interviews has made this almost impossible. In part, they are censoring themselves from the real world. In Swan Songs the following members were involved: Charlie Scene (Jordon Terrell), Johnny 3 Tears (George Ragan), Funny Man (Dylan Alvarez), J-Dog (Jorel Decker), Da Kurlzz (Matthew Busek), and Deuce (Aron Erlichman). Each member plays a different role in the band, and some roles overlap. Charlie raps, sings, and plays the lead guitar. Johnny raps, sings, and plays bass guitar. Funny Man raps and does backup vocals. J-Dog plays rhythm guitar, keyboard, sings, and raps. Da Kurlzz plays percussion and does backup vocals. Finally Deuce sings, plays bass guitar and keyboard. Due to musical differences and internal conflict, Deuce left the band in 2011, shortly after the release of their second album American Tragedy, and was quickly replaced by the bands friend Daniel Murillo, who simply goes by Danny. Every song on Swan Songs involves each member performing different acts.
