The Christian media also did not do much in terms of publicizing and calling attention to the European Jews. Christian publications wrote very few things to nothing about the situation in Europe. Those who had power usually never talked about the Jews in Europe or never talked about it all to their peers. When the Protestant media decided to discuss the issue, they were very careful about what they put out. They warned readers that even when reports of mistreatment were recorded they should be read with doubt and disbelief. Because so many non-Jews were not informed of the holocaust, it prevented them from taking steps to ask the government to rescue the European Jews.
Many people had trouble believing the reports of a planned mass genocide. Although people believed that the Nazis were mistreating the Jews, reports of a planned, systematic genocide seemed far-fetched and unlikely. It was tough for the public to believe these reports because they thought of the Germans as a well-mannered people. A civilized people planning a mass genocide of the Jews seemed absurd. For example, a survey stated “that two million Jews have been killed in Europe since the war began.” They followed this statement by asking, “Do you think this is true or just a rumor?” Forty seven percent of the participants believed the news to be correct, twenty nine percent thought it was false news, while twenty four percent had no

The mistreatment of Jews in Europe led Americans to be distrustful of the government’s attempts to welcome in new refugees. Americans were not moved by the spread of Anti-Semitism in Europe, and they did not show pity towards the suffering Jews. Ethnic discrimination throughout America led many Americans to not be concerned about what their government was doing to help refugees or victims of Nazi persecution.
