Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, was one of the most influential Americans from 1945 to 1980 because of the major impacts his domestic/foreign policies had, his military career before his presidency, and his positive changes to the US. Born on October 14, 1890, he lived in Kansas, Texas with his father, David, and mother, Ida a Mennonite along with his six brothers. He was a simple kid who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing football. He had average grades in school, but because of his pranks and enjoyment of cards and smoking, his teachers didn’t particularly like him. However, he did excel in sports which included football. He became good friends with a man named George S. Patton and together, they created articles that advocated for the army. Afterward, he was moved to a new assignment where he worked for General Fox Conner as an executive officer. General Fox Conner appreciated Eisenhower’s way of thinking about infantry war and helped him rise up the ranks. After WWII started, Eisenhower played an important role in the war and his impressive strategic and tactical skills helped him grow his career and become a war hero. All these accomplishments and contributions assisted him greatly in winning the election and becoming the 34th president of the United States. Once he became President, he changed how other countries viewed the US. Many foreign policies include countries such as the USSR, Vietnam, China, Korea, Iran, Cuba, and Guatemala. These foreign policies were done to help prevent the spread of communism and improve relations between the US and other countries. Eisenhower controlled the tense relationship between the US and the USSR by threatening them with nuclear weapons.
