A law cannot be tolerated nor followed if the law itself violates the very principles the United States was built on. After the end of the Civil War, and the freeing of the African American slaves, laws were created that stripped their rights that should have be guaranteed. Jim Crow laws were created and enforced to form two separate societies, White and African American. Schools, transportation, water fountains, etc. were all segregated. To put an ended to the injustices in the United States, a remarkable movement began with simple civil disobedience. The Civil Rights Movement began in the 1950's. Groups like the SNCC, student lead protest group, and SCLC, lead by Martin Luther King Jr., formed to protest social discrimination, and the unconstitutional laws enacted at the time. Civil disobedience was a key strategy to to both groups strategy to end segregation. It began with Rosa Parks, a member of the SCLC, refused to give up her seat to a white person. At this time buses were segregated, and African Americans were forced to sit at the back of the bus. This lead to her arrest, but began the Civil Rights Movement. that gained people's attention, and lead to more peaceful resistance, such as the Greensboro sit-ins. …show more content…
