During the chaos, the bridge to Harper’s Ferry, Brown’s only possible escape route, was captured, essentially rendering him and his men trapped and thus at the mercy of those besieging the arsenal. Eventually, Brown and his men were forced to retreat to the engine house of the arsenal, further pinning them down and dooming their situation.The following day, United States Marines, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Robert E. Lee, stormed the arsenal after orders to surrender had been refused by Brown and his men. During the storming of the building, ten of Brown’s men were killed and six more, along with Brown himself, were captured. On the second of November, Brown was tried for treason, convicted by the jury--who deliberated only for 45 minutes--and sentenced to hang.
