In Canada´s particular case, a speech rejecting islamophobia and intolerance worked extremely well and made Justin Trudeau´s win the first for the liberal party since Paul Martin was appointed in December of 2003.
Just like in most countries, the majority of the people in Canada do not know or care too much about politicians until they are campaigning and by then most of the opinions are formed based on televised debates or campaign ads. The main factor for his popularity was that he managed to win over a lot of votes because people saw themselves represented in Trudeau´s values and way of thinking.
