Prejudice didn’t change much between the 1930s and 1960s. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird blacks were treated horribly weather they did anything or not. Tom Robinson was charged with rape just because he was black. If he was white he most likely wouldn’t of been killed. In The Help blacks were treated like crap but this is when they started to fight back. Most African American women worked as maids for white families. Calpurnia was treated well in the 1930s but Abolin and Minnie were treated worse. In The Help the blacks couldn’t use the whites bathrooms so they had to go outside no matter what the weather was like. In the early 1960s more African Americans started to fight for their rights and also started to stand up for themselves. Some whites started to see how badly the African Americans were being treated. Many started walking into white only restaurants, stores, and bathrooms and refused to leave which became known as sit-ins. Sit-ins began with four college students who were African American. The four men protested and refused to leave a white only restaurant until they were served. People still remember them today as the “Greensboro Four.” After word got around about the “Greensboro Four” many other African Americans began to protest for equal rights. Rosa Parks is still well known today by being a brave women who stood up for what she believed in. On December 1, 1955 she was suppose to give up her bus seat to a white passenger but instead she didn’t move. The bus driver asked her to move but she protested. The bus driver called the police and she was arrested at the scene.
In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed which was proposed by John F. Kennedy and passes by president Lyndon Johnson. This Act ended segregation in public places and made it illegal for someone not to hire someone due to their race, sex, and religion or
