The Haitian revolution was in a huge crisis, the slaves worked for the French for centuries. As stated by the Haitian revolution “Haiti was then known, became France's wealthiest overseas colony, largely because of its production of sugar, coffee, indigo, and cotton generated by an enslaved labor force” (The Haitian Revolution by Thomas O, Ott 1973). This quote explains how the Haitian slaves became the laborers of goods for the economy to grow. Haiti manufactured goods for Europe and traded slaves for products. Slaves were dehumanized. They worked for long hours without salary. In order to live and survive, they had to listen to their masters and they had to endure mistreatment. Stated by slavery in Haiti “Radical journalists in Paris began to take up the cause of black slaves, pushing for the abolition of slavery, or at least for a more positive view of the Africans” (Slavery and the Haitian revolution). This article explains how some french journalists seeked freedom for African slaves. The slave Colonies from the Caribbean attacked the slave trade from the French colonies. Many African descendants had to run away from their masters due to the harsh conditions under which they lived. Several African slaves eventually died of starvation or were killed. The African slaves in Haiti caught disease from the French colonies. Eventually in 1803 the French were defeated by Haiti. Soon after the war, slaves received citizenship and freedom.
After the war in the Haitian revolution, Haiti abolished slavery and granted the slaves citizenship. After centuries of slavery in Haiti “a declaration asserted that All men are born and remain free and equal in rights” (A revolution in Haiti by the students of the university of Miami).
