In the epic poem Beowulf, the tragic hero engages in several battles with supernatural monsters which lead him to overcome his enemies and become a stronger, wiser, and more courageous warrior. During Beowulf's fight with Grendel's mother he starts to grow more as a character and do to this change he has his most triumphant victory. Fighting for his life Beowulf finds himself overpowered by Grendel’s mom and grasping to stay alive. Looking for a saving grace, Beowulf's prayers are answered as his eyes meet a magic sword, with one powerful strike he defeats the savage beast. Grendel’s mother's death shows situational irony do to the fact the sword used to kill her was created by her own evil ancestors. Beowulf ascends from the darkness of …show more content…
After Beowulf’s battle he changes as he” swam up and away from those silent corpses; the water was calm and clean, the whole huge lake peaceful once the demons who’d lived in it were dead. Then that noble protector of all seamen swam to land, rejoicing in the heavy burdens he was bringing with him. He and all his glorious band of Geats thanked God that their leader had come back unharmed”(Raffel 74). Loyal disciples of Beowulf welcome their hero as he escapes the clutches of death and rises from the lake. Cleansed of all arrogance Beowulf’s rebirth shows him maturing as a character and becoming a humble and respected man. From this point on Beowulf seems more mature, every decision made by the hero shows his wisdom and sagacity. Beowulf, still longing for honor and fame, reject the throne twice realizing that's never been his dream but accepts the offer only to help his kingdom. In the Great Gatsby by Scott F. Fitzgerald, the main character Nick becomes fascinated with the upper class and strives to become part of this elite society. However, once Nick realizes how his dream impacts the lives of individuals he decides to accept where he belongs and not to change to fit any social status.
