As racism occurred between white and black Americans, there was no fair equity which caused injustice to many black citizens. Injustice is unfair treatment or justice for someone. The Freedom Ride of 1961 was a group of white and black American civil rights activists that attended bus rides through the South to protest segregation on transportation. In areas such as Alabama, Freedom Riders would use white only restrooms and restaurants to show that everyone can use everything, no matter the race. The student nonviolent coordinating committee (SNCC) helped the Freedom Ride and played a huge role in helping with the civil rights movement. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” (Bordinick 2024) The book explains how Tom Robinson, a young black man, was walking past the Ewell family's home when he noticed Mayella, a white woman, needed some help chopping wood. Mayella started to flirt with Tom as it was a sign she liked him but Tom didn’t feel comfortable in that situation and later on ran off as he saw Mayellas dad screaming at them as he was drunk. Mayella’s dad, a white man, accused Tom of raping Mayella because he didn’t approve of the skin color of Tom. Atticus Finch, the man helping Tom with his case, knew that he was wrongfully committed and should not go to jail.
