Does Texting Affect Writing

Text messages is one of the most common forms of communication today. It is quick and easy, but there are potential downfalls associated with texting. One of these is the various abbreviations that are commonplace and the potential for these abbreviated terms to carry over into normal conversation. Data does not support this and shows no significant effect in student writing.

Concerns about Textspeak

Countless teachers claim that student writing has declined as a result of texting. They believe the abbreviated terminology and lack of emotional context has caused this decline. Some students inadvertently integrate the vocabulary of texting instead of the correct terminology. This causes some teachers to spend unnecessary time emphasizing the need to use correct words and punctuation or editing papers that these students have submitted. Teachers also are concerned with the emotional effect that result due to texting. Text messages do not have the ability to convey emotion and students show this lack of emotional understanding in their writing.

Both students and teachers were asked various questions to better understand their perception and the reason behind it. Multiple papers were also examined on various topics to determine the extent of improper vocabulary or punctuation. The results were that texting had a minimal impact on student writing. Students recognize the difference between textspeak and formal writing and know when each is appropriate. The important piece is that teachers continue to instruct on the proper techniques of formal writing and when they should be
