Music is present in every culture and used worldwide for a multitude of different purposes. In the past people have used music for recreational enjoyment and religious hymns. But modernly it is used for much more, modernly music is used for boosting memory, help with anxiety, boost attention, help prevent seizers, and even help repair the brain. Music is a powerful ally for modern medicine and affects the brain in interesting ways. To better understand how music affects the brain, scientists have observed the brain of a musician compared to that of a normal person for physical differences. Some quite interesting discoveries were maid from this discovery such as a musician’s brain is more symmetrical than a normal person. “Areas of the brain responsible for motor control, auditory processing, and spatial coordination are larger. They also have a larger corpus callosum” (Alban). The above quote is an observation made by Deane Alban on how music physically affects the brain, making the used sections larger. Individuals with Alzheimers have a loss of memory due to the disease attacking the brains nerve cells, causing the victim to lose their memories and the ability to think. “ Most people associate music with important events and a wide array of emotions. The connection can be so strong that hearing a tune long after the occurrence evokes a memory of it” (Alzheimer’s foundation of America). With musical therapy the victim’s stress can be managed, as well as letting them revive memories strongly associated with particular songs. Just be careful that the piece doses not evoke stress. Just as music can make a victim recall good memories, they can also recall tragic memories. Recalling a tragic memory can put the victim under more stress than they currently were
