First, my maternal grandmother, who I called Grandma G directly impacted my educational choices. She died when I was 7, of dementia. Until then, I was often with my mother who helped support her, I watched confusedly as my grandmother’s condition accelerated. At the time of this memory, I was around five. I remember going to her apartment, which was part of an Alzheimer’s unit in a nursing home, watching her as she tried to complete easy tasks like eating or putting on clothes. I thought that when people got older, everyone got dementia. I obviously projected my impression of elderly aging from my grandmother, but this thought had an impact on my personality. As a result, I became sympathetic to people, concerning myself with the state we would all end in. To make up for it, I tried to make people’s lives better and helped them as much as I could, even though I usually couldn’t do much but make them smile. Counseling psychologists help individuals discover, understand, and react to their motives and actions in life. I want to become a counseling psychologist because I want to help individuals understand themselves so that they can experience change and achieve their goals. My ultimate goal is to open my own private practice. This goal is based on my commitment to others, and in order to achieve that goal, I will also commit to furthering my education and continuing to pursue the helpful and kind traits that my Grandmothers have ignited in
