In 1960, a band formed in Liverpool, England that would go on to change the world. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe, and Pete Best formed The Beatles, and through a few changes to the original lineup, went on to become the most famous band in the world. Stuart Sutcliffe, the original bassist, died and Paul McCartney took over the bass. Pete Best was replaced with Ringo Starr as the drummer, and the Fab Four was formed: John Lennon (rhythm guitarist), Paul McCartney (bassist), George Harrison (lead guitarist), and Ringo Starr (drummer). Shout! attempts to tell their stories and how they changed the world. The book begins with the members’ births. John Lennon was born in 1940 in the middle of a German air raid. The book recounts how immediately after he was born his mother, Julia, had to hide with him under a bed to protect themselves in case a bomb was dropped on the place where he was born. Shout! provides an interesting look not only into the life and career of The Beatles but into what life was like in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and on.
