Dental hygienist observation Dental hygiene plays a critical role in patients' health by preventing and treating periodontal diseases. Additionally, dental care is beneficial for aesthetics and digestion. Regularly obtaining a professional dental cleaning prevents buildup of tartar, plaques and bacteria. It helps prevent cavities, and aids in overall health. To begin, from the shadowing experience, I learned the distinct roles of a dental hygienist. I observed great teamwork and professionalism. I observe the importance of great motor skills, and dexterity when using dental instruments. I would also observe if there was bleeding in the gum area patient would be recommended to use a medication solution called irrigation in order to help with inflammation. Additionally, some patients choose fluoride applications to protect the enamel and prevent tooth decay, while others do not. Furthermore, I observe dental hygienist perform more than the cleaning, they perform other tasks such as Xray, and apply anesthetics. To explain, a patient a crown came off while at home and it was affecting how she eats, and it caused a lot of sensitivity in which case the dental hygienist performs an X-ray and discovered there was a cavity growing next to the tooth preventing that patient from retaining that crown. Another patient experienced pain months after her root canal was done, and there was some inflammation in the gums as well. It affects how the patient eats and the position of how the lips are rested. in which cases anesthetic was applied by the dental hygienist to prevent further pain from the cleaning.
