Lacrosse comes from a tribal game played by all eastern Woodlands Native Americans and by some Indians in Canada. The game was cahnged by European immigrants to North America to create its current collegiate and professional form.

Four quarters makes a game: The length of a box or field lacrosse game is 60 minutes, which 4 quarters lasting 15 minutes each. Two halves also make a whole game: The age and/or gender of the teams playing, will be based on the length of a lacrosse game. Women's lacrosse matches are divided into halves instead of quarters, and can range from 50 to 60 minutes. Minor league games have a wide variety of lengths and divisions, from 8 to 12-minute quarters and/or three 20-minute periods. High-school games have 12-minute quarters. College lacrosse is played by student athletes at colleges and universities. Men's field lacrosse and women's lacrosse are played in both the varsity and club levels. Recently in the 2015 NCAA lacrosse season they had 68 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse teams and 66 of them organized into 10 conferences but two teams playing as independent D-I programs without a conference affiliation. These teams are located heavily in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions and only three teams are not in the Eastern Time
