Family history and genetics play a big role in this development. “Most people with Down syndrome develop Alzheimer's because they have an extra copy of chromosome 21, which contains the gene that generates harmful amyloid” ("Alzheimer's Disease Fact Sheet"). If a parent of sibling has the genes, the chance of developing this disease is higher. Scientists discovered rare mutations that account for about five percent of Alzheimer’s. “Some evidence suggests that the same factors that put you at risk of heart disease also may increase the chance that you'll develop Alzheimer's” ("Alzheimer's Disease"). Factors relating to this may include lack of exercise, smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, elevated amino acid (one of the building blocks that make up proteins) found in the blood, poorly controlled diabetes, or a diet lacking fruits and vegetables. Relation between mentally and socially challenging activities have been found to reduce Alzheimer’s from progressing. Higher levels of formal education and stimulating jobs can also reduce the risks of this disease.
