For this essay I have selected and researched two archaeologists, Augustus Pitt Rivers and the great Howard Carter. Both of these archaeologists are English and they are very important for different reasons. In this essay I will discuss each of these archaeologists lives, contributions, and finds. Howard Carter was born on the 9th day of May way back in the year of 1874 in London. His dad, Samuel Carter, was an artist whose work mostly consisted of landscapes and animals, and who was the main animal artist for the Illustrated London News. Howard lived in the countryside in Swaffham because he was considered a sickly child and wasn’t deemed strong enough to live in London with his family. He was raised by his aunts who also homeschooled him since he was not allowed to be in state schools. His upbringing and education are thus much unknown since there are no records indicating where he was during most of his childhood. Most people assume that he stayed in Swaffham for most of his early years. It was quite apparent, however, that Howard Carter was a very artistic and imaginative man, much like his father. He then enlisted in the British Army which enabled him to quickly buy his way up the military ladder. He literally shelled out money to be promoted up to the maximum paid level of Lieutenant-Colonel. He had a broad variety of military experience which ranged from studying musketry to his only actual battle experiences in Crimea in 1854 after which “a medical examination pronounced him unfit for service” (Bowden 1991).
