Physical abuse- Physical abuse is defined as the use of physical force that may result in injury to the body.
Sexual abuse- Sexual abuse is any sort of non-consensual sexual contact.
Emotional/psychological abuse – Characterized by a person subjecting or exposing another to behaviour that may result in psychological trauma eg. Anxiety, depression, traumatic stress disorder.
Institutional abuse- Mistreatment of people brought about by poor or inadequate care of support.
Financial abuse- Can be subtle, being told what you can or not by no control of your own money.
Self-neglect- Acts that threaten his/her health and safety as a matter of personal choice.
Neglect by others – failure to provide necessary care, support and guidance.
1.2 Identify the signs and/or symptoms associated with each type of abuse.
Signs of physical abuse, hitting, slapping, kicking others can be multiple bruising, fractures, scratches and cuts.
Sexual abuse can be seen physically and behaviour signs. Some physical signs could be bite marks, abrasions or infection in anal/genital regions or even pregnancy. Behaviour signs such as self-harm, self-destructive behaviour like alcohol and drug abuse.
Psychological abuse also known as emotional abuse some other signs are bullying, ignoring, shouting, swearing, humiliation, controlling, intimidation and coercion.
Financial abuse is individual that is vulnerable with their finances and somebody taking advantage of this. Theft, fraud, exploitation.
Neglect is somebody not looking after their health by choice some indicator to look for are;
-Memory loss/concentration
-Alcohol and drug misuse problems
-Sensory loss or difficulty
-Mental illness, mental health problems.
These all self-inflicted examples of neglect.
There is also another type of neglect that is inflicted by others this can be a relative/support worker not fulfilling the standard of care.
-Not providing adequate food
-Not providing assistance with eating food
-Leaving somebody alone
-Not talking care to provide a safe and secure environment.
Discriminatory abuse signs include;
-Racist and sexist abuse
-Harassment, slurs or similar treatment
-Abuse directed towards religion
-Abuse based on disability
