Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a woman’s uterus or womb. It is classified as a radical surgery and used to treat many women health conditions including abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic inflammatory disease, cancer of the uterus, cervix or ovaries, chronic pelvic pain, uterine fibroids and endometriosis to name a few (Stang, 2016). However, focus will be placed on the reasons for doing a hysterectomy on woman who have endometriosis and exactly why this choice was made.
As stated above endometriosis is a condition resulting from the appearance of endometrial tissue outside the uterus (lining) causing pelvic pain (Stoppler, 2016). There are several methods of treatment that can be utilized before considering to do a hysterectomy. These include medications, conservative surgery and laparoscopy. The conservative surgery is done for those women who want to become pregnant and suffer from severe pain. It involves the removal/destruction of the endometrial tissue growth from around the uterus lining without destroying the reproductive organs.
