In 2008, the Taliban had threatened and destroyed multiple schools. They acted upon their threats to gain control of the nearby valleys, including Swat. Malala’s father refused to close his school for girls, regardless of the terroristic threats. At the end of the year, the Taliban stated that all girl’s schools must close by January 15, 2009. The threat frightened Malala’s pupils immensely. However, Malala did not believe that the Taliban had the power to act upon their threat. She recognized “The Taliban could take our pens and books, but they couldn’t stop our minds from thinking” (Yousafzai and Lamb 146).
