This connects to the poem “Dreams”. I believe that this connects because Melba has dreamed of blacks and whites becoming equal and she knows that her going to Central High is the first step to becoming equal. Another positive experience in the book that Melba dealt with is her friend Vince. Vince showed up to Melba’s party when no one else did and it meant something to her knowing that he had the chance to go to the other party, but went to her house first. This situation reminds me of the poem “ I, Too, Sing America” because this poem is about finding acceptance. Vince shows acceptance to Melba, even though she moved schools and left all her old friends behind.
A poem that reminds me of racial issues that relate to today is “Children’s Rhymes”. This poem is about blacks thinking that they aren’t equal to whites. In the line, “I know I can’t be President,” I feel that it relates to Barack Obama because many whites didn’t like having a black president. Another example, that relates to the same poem, is the line that states, “ Liberty and Justice for all”- I feel this relates to racial issues today especially with Colin Kaepernick and his refusal to stand during the national anthem to protest the lack of equality in
