Immigration deems to be a touchy topic, especially illegal immigration. “According to recent immigration data, approximately 5.5 million children in the United States under the age of 18 live in undocumented households, and between 1.5 and 2 million of them are undocumented students”(Kim, 2013). The United States government is trying to put laws in place to stop illegal immigration and finding innovative ways to prevent these people from entering the country. One of these bills is called the D.R.E.A.M Act, or the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (The development, relief, and education for alien minors (dream) act.2011) . The name of this bill describes the actions that should be taken for alien minors; provide them with a means of aid, education and also ways in which they can better themselves, like access into the military or a chance at a citizenship or permanent residency. “The DREAM Act is a bipartisan piece of federal legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for responsible, qualifying children of unauthorized immigrants. Since its introduction in 2001, the act has gained over two hundred cosponsors in Congress. But because of opposition from the White House, it failed to become law in October 2007 as it fell just short in a procedural vote in the Senate”(Padrón, …show more content…

Illegal alien children who came here unbeknownst of the crime they were committed because of their parents should not be held responsible for something they had little to no control over. “Illegal Immigration will always be an issue in our country 13% of undocumented aliens are children and that number is on a rise”(Thronson, 2010). This bill will allow for a great deal of the minority population who want to pursue higher education to have the legal means to do so. Also if they complete their 4 years of undergraduate education or serve in the military for a couple of years they are eligible to file for citizenship. “Undocumented immigrant children are garnered bi-partisan support in the form of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act”(Mahatmya & Gring-Pemble, 2014). The funding for these needs to be increase, many people complain about illegal immigrants but offer no actual resolution to the problem. Although they are granted the opportunity to attend university in the United States they aren’t awarded any financial aid (The DREAM act immigrant access to higher education.2010).
