How Can We Reduce Impaired Driving?
Impaired driving is a serious issue in today’s society. In 2011, there was a whopping 121 people charged with impaired driving in Canada, especially in the last few months. (Statistics Canada) Canada needs to change their legislation before more people commit this horrendous crime and hurt more people. For example, on November 8 2015, a 24-year-old Hamilton man was changed for impaired driving after driving his car off the escarpment and then taking a cab back home. Nothing positive comes from impaired driving. However, impaired driving does not only involve cars. Madd Canada states that “135 boating deaths per year from 2006 to 2008 and it appears that more than 50% of these boating deaths involved alcohol and/or drugs.” Impaired driving has a very negative effect on society, therefore there should be new legislation to not only punish people who commit this crime but to also deter people from it. This will cause retribution. This approach will work not only because it will make people more fearful of breaking this law, but it will also use reintegrative shaming to further deter others. This follows Durkheim’s theory that he explains in The Division of Labor in Society. According to Durkheim, “society reflects widely shared social values”. Many people frown upon drunk drivers because they know how dangerous it is. They believe that drunk drivers go against everyone’s morals. Durkheim has a thesis that “the social can only be explained by social facts”. (Gesa, 93) Durkheim’s social facts are the norms of society. The theory of anomie explains why the laws need to be changed. The current laws are not very harsh so individuals are not fearful of the law.
