I want to work on being more innovative, thinking more outside of the box and really focusing on how my actions affect others both positively and negatively. Although I consider myself more open-minded than most people I still think this part of my thinking habits need changes because there is still issues that I feel uncomfortable to see or talk freely about. For example Jehovah’s Witnesses refusing blood transfusion. I feel that when an individual is young and their life is at hand and the only thing that will save them is a blood transfusion no religion should refuse them to save this life. However, I need to learn to be more open-minded about the different religions and understand their choice and respect it.

The habit of the mind that I would improve on is open-mindedness. I think for me as an aspiring nurse I need to be receptive of others views. I often times reflect on my biases before, during and after an encounter and realize my shortcomings and have devised ways on improving. Learning more about others’ culture, and lived experience is allowing me to be more sensitive to others perception.

I would like to improve upon my level of inquisitiveness. This is because I grew up in a culture where digging too much for information is frown upon and questioning authority is almost unacceptable but I think to be able to make a very accurate decision one need to be a little inquisitive and seek for hidden information both from patients and senior nurses.
I would like to improve upon my level of creativity. This is because I still have a portion of me that is stuck with my upbringing back in Ghana whereby you don’t question or support certain particular position but I think to be able to be an effective nurse, I must evolve and be ready to use the creative part of my thinking to restructure and reinvent myself here to help solve the unique problem of the community I am currently residing in and working at.
