The use of mascots date all the way back to the Civil War. Bulldogs were used to represent different infantry units and help lift the moral of the soldiers. Mascots are also used to help sell a brand. They are familiar icons that encourage us to unite around the product or entity they represent.
Over the past several years some mascots have become the center of controversies. Schools and sport teams that have a Indian as a mascot are finding themselves in a heated battle with some American Indian tribes. The tribes believe the mascots belittle them and their history. They also believe that it is degrading and a form of stereotyping and want all Indian mascots eliminated. At Marion High School we use the Indian Head as our mascot. I do not
