Benefits that Cause Harm
(1)The Inuit lifestyle contains many different cultural aspects to it. Some of these include the marine diet, hunting, and traditional beliefs. There has been issues regarding pollution in the Arctic and they come from harmful chemicals that travels to the north (Cone 357). These chemicals include PCBs, chlordane, toxaphene, and DDT (Cone 357). Because these chemicals exist in the diet that most Inuits currently follow, many are wondering if Inuits should still stay with their diet choice. There diet choice is a very important part of their lifestyle. I think Inuits should be able to stay with their current lifestyle because changing it wouldn’t improve their lives. The chemical “PCB” that exists in the Arctic, is able to affect the liver in a way similar to smoking and alcohol (“Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)”). It is also said that children have slower mental development when exposed to PCBs (“Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)”). Just PCB alone was already so devastating, and there are many other chemicals. Their understanding of meat from marine mammals is far exceeding its actual benefits. Actual benefits would include its nutritional value and how it is less expensive than buying market food. Fake benefits would be the correlation between amount of marine animal meat eaten and number of sicknesses to occur. There is no scientific proof of how eating less meat from marine mammals would lead to more sicknesses. Inuits should gain an actual understanding of what is true and what is false. After they understand how some of their beliefs are wrong, they will have a higher chance of not getting a psychological distress when they are told about the contamination issue. At that time they can choose their diet choice based on what they really know about the marine diet and not fake
