The Impact of Invasive Species

An invasive species is a species that has been brought to a new habitat in which they are not native. These species come in many different forms, such as plants, animals and fungi. Invasive species are very dangerous to our environment in ways we can’t always control. They compete with native species for resources, they don’t have any disease in their new habitat, they can overeat at any certain tropic level, they’re way over populated, they have very few predators, they’re dispersal and take over others habitats including ours. Eventually they could even dominate an ecosystem through monoculture. This effects humans by increase of infestation, habitat degradation and costs billions of dollars. Invasive species have cost the world over 1 trillion dollars and the United States 1 billion so far. These species could eventually take over everything.

Types of invasive species include: Emerald Ash Borer, Sea Lamprey, Zebra mussels, and Buckthorn. Emerald Ash Borer is a green beetle native to Eastern Asia that feed on Ash trees. They were first detected in 2002 and were thought to be brought over

Some ways that they travel is through balis. Bali’s is the water they put in at the bottom of ships to even out weight and then gets dumped on a whole different side of the ocean and from firewood. They also spread by being on atvs, bikes, cars, and hiking boots. Some ways we can manage these species is through treatment and reducing transport. What conservators are trying to work towards on is trying to find a way to kill these species and/or condensing the growth/reproduction. Some ways we can prevent the spread is by cleaning off hiking boots after hiking, clean, drain, dry and don’t ever move firewood, be educated, have inspections done, and check for mud, weeds or mussels once you come off the lake. This way we can prevent the spread invasive species and save other
