Non-indigenous invasive species cause harm to native species by degrading the habitat, disturbing the environment, and invading space. An example of such an invasive species is the ecologically destructive non-indigenous ant, Solenopsis invicta. This species was introduced in Mobile, Alabama in the 1930s, but has slowly made it’s way throughout the southeastern states. Some “ground-nesting species lay eggs or produce altricial young may be especially vulnerable to direct impacts” (Allen et al. 1995). These species are impacted by “predation of newly hatching young.” Fire ants not only affect ground-nesting species through predation but also affects “ecological processes such as seed dispersal” (Zettler et al. 2001).
