Irena Sendler: A Tragic Hero

One of the biggest unheard of heroes in this world would be Irena Sendler. During the war Irena saw a situation that she viewed as unjust and took matters into her own hands. Irena felt the way the Germans were killing the Jews was wrong and so she helped Jewish children go into hiding during this time. Irena had her and her family to take care of but decided to go and help other people. This action put her and her family in grave danger, but she didn’t stop doing what she felt was right. Irena sacrificed her life to help others and had the courage to do all of this without thinking twice. Her devotion to the Jewish children that she saved is a lesson for all generations to admire. Throughout Irena’s life she watched as her father would help and take care of needy and poor people. Irena’s father tried to teach her that despite the situation that people maybe in, you should always put yourself out there and help all. Irena kept these thoughts and visions with her through out her life and used it as a guide line through out her career paths. One of her responsibilities she had during the war was to be in charge of soup kitchens. This was not true of Irena. Irena’s heroics were done quietly and secretively. After the war she returned to her job as a social worker, never searching for honors or acknowledgements for her deeds. She never wrote a book or published anything to pat herself on the back for her actions. I believe that Irena was a really good person. Irena made me believe that not all Europeans were bad during the Holocaust. Irena was Polish and did not have to help the Jews but decided to help without anyone asking her.
