College is Worth the Struggle
College is much more than just an education. It is a résumé builder. It also provides connection in the real world. It gives you possible entry into exclusive organizations such as going Greek. College also helps master time management. Should college be based purely on just the numbers, or does education offer more intangible and more important benefits that can be captured by career statistics? Will we look past the basic “money” worth of college and observe all the assets? College will help build your résumé by giving you many opportunities to better yourself and further your education through getting involved in college activities. …show more content…
Connections in the real world is a very important perk while attending college and furthering education. Although connections will not be placed in one’s hand and must be worked for they are invaluable for recommendations, job interviews, and furthering ones education if that is chosen. In college there are many people who have experienced the things that someone might be going through and give valuable advice and have no problem helping students out. Most professors will point a student in the right direction depending on the student’s credibility and drive. Another invaluable resource you get from college is forming relationships with students and professors. Students and professors can help you with whatever struggles you might have down the road. Some might disagree with using college to get connections, and argue that starting a job and working ones way up through the ranks can do the same thing. The social aspect alone is enough to entice an oncoming freshen to go Greek. Moving from a town about an hour and a half away last fall I knew very few people at Northwestern State University. Within a week of joining the fraternity I met a surplus of new people that are my friends today. Another invaluable resource would be the alumni connections that Natchitoches has to offer. From city police officers, to lawyers, to automotive repair shops and even bartenders, Kappa Sigma has invaluable resources and connections that have helped me more in the past month than I thought was possible. Being new to the town of Natchitoches I was not familiar with the speed limits. I was pulled over by a city police officer and was informed that I was speeding, going 37mph in a 25mph zone. I explained to him that “I was new to, the town and staying on campus and was not fully aware of the speed limits yet,” He wasn’t buying. By chance he saw my Kappa Sigma fraternity pledge pin and asked if I was in the fraternity. After knowing I was in the fraternity, he laughed and pulled up his pants to reveal his Kappa Sigma ankle tattoo. We exchanged laughs and a few stories, he then shook my hand and let me off with a warning which very easily could’ve been a hefty fine of a ticket.
