In the discussion of gentrification, a controversial issue is whether it is good or bad. While some argue that gentrification is bad, others contend that gentrification is good. Gentrification in the neighborhood could be acceptable and unacceptable depending on one’s view. Longtime residents in the neighborhood view gentrification as something that is atrocious, but, on the other hand, the newcomers in and living in the neighborhood could view it as a positive. Due to these factors, there is a positive effect of gentrification: the rebuilding and reconstruction of old and new houses and apartments; the rebuilding of new buildings leads to fewer abandoned lots and results in less criminal activities and crimes; the value of homes will increase …show more content…
From a personal experience, a contributing editor of ebony magazine, Damon Young talks about his hometown Pittsburg. In the article, he talks about after this old neighborhood gets gentrified it got safer and become the trendiest place now. He talks about before renewing his hometown it was not safe. That one day he went out wearing a red jacket and people think he almost got shot and has blood all over him just because he is wearing a red jacket. And back during that period of time the stores close early and there were gangs outside. But after gentrification, there were luxury condos and stores open later at night. Overall this is a positive cause of gentrification that if more abandoned lot is use to open for condos, stores, and restaurants then there will have less abandoned lets or no abandoned lots left. It benefits the people working in the restaurant, retail, marketing and legal firms and hotels and launderettes. Also for example in New York City is the best example of overall jobs growth and wages. Gentrifying the area could help to grow the job which gives more people opportunities and chances.
