They argue about whether prisons stop crime, help people change for the better, and keep the public safe. In other words, the custodial model, the rehabilitation model, and the reintegration model. The US locks up a lot of people, more than most other countries, which makes some wonder if it's working right. Critics say things like too many people in jail, lots of people going back to jail after being released, and unfair treatment show that the system isn't doing its job. But some people believe that prisons are necessary to keep society safe and fair. …show more content…

We should also use fairer sentencing laws, considering alternatives like community service or drug treatment for nonviolent crimes. Inside prisons, we need to ensure decent conditions and healthcare for inmates. Keeping inmates connected to their families and communities is important, too. We must also address issues like racism in the justice system and help former inmates find homes and jobs after they're released. These changes will take time and effort, but they're practical steps towards making prisons better for everyone. To sum up, the American prison system isn't working well. Instead of helping inmates change for the better, it mostly focuses on punishment. This leads to overcrowding, lots of people going back to jail after being released, and big problems for society. To make things better, we need to focus more on helping people change and find ways to avoid jail for punishment. We need to make realistic changes so that prisons can help inmates improve and stop the cycle of punishment and repeat
