In the movie ‘Edward Scissorhands’, Tim burton showcases the ways that society can alienate and isolate a character due to their differences. Brought up alone, deserted and incomplete, Edward was left to face the day-to-day struggles of being an outcast. Fitting into society was near impossible for Edward, as having scissors as hands was inhuman. The new gossip of the town was the arrival of Edward. As everyone gets to know Edward, he started to feel valued and loved by the people of the town, and has the ability to do many things, such as hedge sculpting, haircuts and cutting roasted meat. Although Edward is liked, people still cannot help but throw in comments such as, “I’ve got a doctor as a friend, he might be able to help you” this is because they want to change his appearance, so he can conform to the rest of the characters in the movie. The first scene in the movie, peg wonders over to Edwards ‘bed’, and looks at the range of newspaper clippings. ‘Boy born without eyes, reads with hands’, and ‘never diet again’, are just some of the clippings there. This shows that Edward is almost ashamed of himself. He knows that he is different and instead of going into the outside world, he stays isolated and hidden in his lonely mansion. He is afraid of being judged and violated about his differences. As the cameras perform low-angled shots when Edward is crouched in a dark corner, you can see the faint outline of only Edwards’s scissors, glistening in the dark. “Where are your parents, uh, your mother…um, your father? Peg had said, “He never woke up” Edward replied.
