Additionally, that same day they attacked pearl harbor, Japan also attacked the philippines and other small nations, and as a result of this act our president at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan but 3 days later Hitler and Mussolini declare war on the United States. Because Japan took surprise action on the philippines as well after pearl harbor the Filipino forces and the U.S had to stay in the Bataan area, which they were there for 99 days until Japan forced them to surrender on April 9, 1942. The U.S desperately wanted to capture the island of Iwo Jima and three Japanese controlled airfields, and planned to attack at night.
