Iwo Jima started in February 1945 during world war two. America wanted to use the island of iwo jima because it was closer to the island of Japan by 565 miles they could use the American B-29 bombers to Japan without returning all the way to the Marians. They also wanted to use it for a base that escorts fighters that will assist in the bombing campaign. There was roughly 26,00 Americans and 23,000, Japanese navy and army troops on the island. The american ground forces were supported by the Navy and Aircraft. Before the battle started American battleships were already there three days beforehand and had launched a continuous barrage on the island. In the midst of the war there was a picture that gave America hope. The soldiers who raised the flags were Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, Michael Strank, Franklin Sousley, Rene Gagnon, and Harlon Block. Only three lived. Although the three that lived got famous were shipped back to the US and was rewarded and got to be on tour for the picture. Two of them didn't want to take the picture at all and had trouble and wanted to go back to fight with their men.When the Japanese knew they were going to lose they started to kill themselves off in pillboxes. The japanese rather be dead than be caught by the american military. The military that went to Iwo Jima was called the marine corps. The marine corps were apart of the navy branch. One of the reasons America won is because they had way more people than the Japanese. After while, America started to win since Japan was running low on supplies America won. It was very obvious that the Americans were going to win. Though it was very hard, they took over a yard at a time finally winning the war. There was still some Japanese let that didn't get to commit suicide, although they did refused to surrender. The battle officially ended March 26,
