Jack London: The Greatest Naturalist of The Century

Jack London, it is not an exaggeration to call him the greatest naturalist of the century. People who love reading have maybe heard of him. Books such as White Fang, The Call Of The Wild are evidence that establishes Jack London as the greatest naturalist of the century. London was a novelist, journalist, short story writer and essayist. Most of his writing were based on realism and naturalism. Jack London was born on January 12,1876 in San Francisco. London was born between Flora Wellman and William Chaney who was an attorney, journalist and was famous for American Astrology. He was born in a poor family, and though London received poor education, London educated himself. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed the house of London when he was young. London enjoyed reading books, so he found and read Ouida’s long Victorian novel Signa, which he credits with his literary success. London also worked 12-18 hours a day to overcome poverty.

When London was still 17 years old his mother pushed him to join a writing contest against students from Stanford and California. Even though he had only an eighth grade education, he won the first prize, and this was when London devoted his life to writing short stories. London’s first story is “An Old Soldier’s Story”, but his first work to be published was “A Thousand Death”. It was written in 1899 and is a short story by London. It is a story about a mad scientist who made an experiment which killed people and after the experiment there was a protagonist who resurrects and fights. It was not really famous but brought London a little bit closer to the attention of the literary
