Citizens who disregard the law in any matter that can place another individual in harm’s way could be detained and incarcerated for their crimes. In the last century, two distinct types of facilities were created to distinguish from an individual’s crimes. For instance, an individual who committed a small harmless crime like stealing candy from a store would be sent to jail, which is a short-term punishment that can be resolved in court with a fine or probation. The individuals who commit more serious crimes like murder, rape, and other crimes that potentially places an individual in danger or damages them in a way are placed in prison. Prisons can be easily defined as a fortress that houses those who committed egregious crimes and are sentenced to a long-term confinement.
Throughout the U.S., every state has various amounts of prisons and jails to house the tremendous number of criminals. One state stands out with having one of the top incarcerations rates in the U.S., which is the state of Georgia. …show more content…

Prisons are prisons for a reason and that is to keep the violent individuals away from those who abide by the laws. Prisons can be extremely strict like in the military with less freedoms.
